ABOUT ABOUT

Evoking angst and suspense with images and selections from childhood bedtime stories, Dr. Bateman’s captivating presentation will highlight the dichotomy between traditional legends and contemporary fairytales.

“Hedges of thorns grow around sleeping castles, wolves swallow innocent girls, and heroes and heroines are caught in endless labyrinths…,” begins Dr. Bateman who proceeds to explain one of the themes in “Wicked Witches and Big Bad Wolves: The Wild Within.” “The complex topography of our collective imagination is detectable in traditional folk tales. Tensions mirror our dynamics and emotions, however modern children's stories have lost this reflective quality. The result is a culture that seeks immediate answers and stories that neither imitate what is real nor satisfy the wild within.”
