Gain insights about the area from David Huggins who will present on how geological processes formed the landscape of the Tahoe-Truckee area. The collision of the North American and Pacific tectonic plates has caused igneous rock to rise up through the crust. These igneous rocks include the granitic rocks we see as well as volcanoes and volcanic flows in other locations and have caused the metamorphosis of older sedimentary rocks. There are many faults, some still active, that have built mountains and valleys. These faults have displaced glacial deposits during the most recent ice age, and have deflected the present day Truckee River. Some of the faults have caused earthquakes that we feel occasionally, have affected the use of a dam, and have the potential to cause tsunamis. Glaciers have moved rocks, carved valleys and deposited moraines that have further shaped our peaks, valleys and lakes.
